About Programs

Below is a list of the programs offered by Wisconsin Chapter APDA. Please visit our Donate page to donate to any of the following programs.

Respite Care

Our respite care program currently offers stipends of $750 per year per family to those affected by Parkinson disease. In the past, it was only offered in Dane County, but with help from donors, it has expanded to the whole state of Wisconsin. Care is offered in-home or in-facility by reliable agencies and the family is reimbursed by the APDA Wisconsin Chapter. For more information or to receive the respite care application, please email the APDA Wisconsin Chapter.

Education

We provide education about Parkinson disease to patients, family members, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nursing home facilities, senior centers, and the general public. Contact us to get a training or education program at your facility.

Exercise Classes

Wisconsin Chapter APDA supports exercise classes taught by instructors trained in PWR! (Parkinson Wellness Recovery) and LSVT BIG! We offer vouchers for financial assistance. In 2012, we started a variety of innovative exercise programs including the Step by Step pedometer program. We also sponsor annual trainings for physical therapists and occupational therapists to get trained in PWR!

Support Groups

Support groups help people with Parkinson’s connect with others in similar conditions and provide support for friends and family members. To find a support group in your area, visit our Resource Locator.

Information & Referral Center

The Information & Referral Center is located at Water Tower Place (5900 Monona Drive, Suite 407). It offers education and literature about Parkinson disease, a phone line to answer questions, and provides support to area support groups and programs. The Center also refers people to resources in their area, including movement disorder specialists, exercise classes and support groups. Use the Service Locator to locate resources in your area.

Newsletter

The statewide newsletter is sent out through the mail on a quarterly basis. Monthly email updates are sent throughout the month as events occur. Both include news, education programs, exercise class information, support group information, and articles about the latest research and treatments.

Mentoring Program

We offer a mentoring program for newly diagnosed people with Parkinson disease. New patients are matched up with people who have had Parkinson’s for at least 3 years. To download the mentor application form, click here.

Research

We do not currently run any Parkinson’s-specific research in Wisconsin. Any monies donated to research go to the National office of the American Parkinson Disease Association and are distributed to their National Advanced Research Centers.
